Deploying the SmartDeploy Client via Group Policy

If you wish to deploy the SmartDeploy Client via Group Policy, you may follow the steps below.

  1. Create or identify a file share to host the files needed.
  2. Switch to the Activities workspace, and click Add Devices.
  3. Click the 'Generate Client Setup' tile to generate the SDEClientSetup.msi
  4. Confirm the correct server name is set, and save it to the file share you identified.
  5. Open the Group Policy Management console.
  6. Expand the domain, and right-click the OU containing the client computers you wish to target.
  7. Clicked Create a GPO in this Domain and link it here.
  8. Give the GPO a name, such as SmartDeploy Client.
  9. Expand the OU, right-click SmartDeploy Client and click Edit.
  10. Expand Computer Configuration > Policies > Software Settings.
  11. Right-click Software Installation and select New > Package
  12. Type the UNC path to the share and click Open. (e.g. \\Hostname\Share)
  13. Select SDEClientSetup.msi and click Open.
  14. Select Advanced and then click OK.
  15. Re-select Assigned and then check the box for 'Install this application at logon.'
  16. Click OK.
  17. Optional:
    1. Run gpupdate /force on client.
    2. Press Y when prompted to restart.
    3. Log in after restart, and allow a minutes or so for the client to appear in the console.
